Cascadia / The operating system

Deliver solutions.
Carry learning forward.

Cascadia is an evolving, platform-agnostic operating system for delivering solutions and building knowledge. It captures learning from each application to improve future work.

  • Built through delivery: Aaron Robbins developed Cascadia through hands-on analytical and knowledge work.
  • Ready for another context: apply the accumulated practice to a company’s data and analytics needs.

02

Five capabilities supporting the work.

Each capability has a distinct responsibility. Expand a definition for its working contents, then follow their interaction below.

Sovereign Ground

Keep ownership, authoritative sources and continuity clear.

Which version is authoritative, and where does it belong?

What is included in Sovereign Ground?
Authoritative homes
Source ownership, catalogs, provenance and the location of maintained assets.
Knowledge continuity
Decisions, source registers, session records and references that preserve context.
Portability and custody
Version identity, retained artifacts, access boundaries and reliable handoffs.

These are responsibility areas. A final module taxonomy and unified lifecycle registry remain in development.

Foundation Readiness

Establish a usable foundation for a declared application.

What exists, what is usable, and what needs attention first?

What is included in Foundation Readiness?
Inventory
Identify existing data, documents, tools, definitions, constraints and owners.
Rationalize
Resolve duplication, conflicting sources, gaps and responsibilities within the agreed scope.
Operationalize
Make the selected arrangement usable and verify access, configuration and behavior.

Inventory, Rationalize and Operationalize are process stages, rather than three separate modules.

Solutions Foundry

Turn a defined need into a useful solution, with evidence and retained learning.

What needs to be delivered, and what will count as success?

What is included in Solutions Foundry?
Brief and scope
Define the decision, audience, inputs, intended output and acceptance conditions.
Build and correct
Use an appropriate delivery profile, from a small incremental micro-build to an analytical module.
Compare and learn
Preserve versions, compare when commissioned, and capture human feedback and technical observations.
Deliver and retain
Keep the source, evidence, acceptance decision and next action linked to the delivered version.

Maintained brief, module-build, micro-build, comparison and retrospective procedures exist. Wider intake and orchestration continue to evolve.

Experience Framework

Shape how people encounter, understand and use the work.

Can the intended audience understand it and act?

What is included in Experience Framework?
Web Design
Page structure, responsive layout, navigation, interactions and reusable components.
Visualization
Quantitative meaning, chart expression, provenance, accessibility and reader interpretation.
Documents
Document, email and export presentation suited to their use.
Identity
Marks, typography and coherent identity application across outputs.

These are the four documented modules. A company or project supplies its applicable profile and constraints.

Trust Assurance

Establish the evidence supporting confidence and acceptance.

What has been checked, what remains uncertain, and who accepts the result?

What is included in Trust Assurance?
Data Integrity
Source identity, completeness, conformance and retained data boundaries.
Analytical Validity
Business definitions, expected cases, calculations and appropriately separate derivation.
Experience Assurance
Readability, accessibility, interaction paths and intended understanding.
Engineering Controls
Source, build and change controls relevant to the application.
Operational Reliability
Run behavior, reconciliation, recovery and visible failures.
Evidence and Acceptance
Version-linked findings, limits and an accountable human decision.

This is the six-module working scope. Existing checks support parts of it; the umbrella is not a claim of a unified assurance service.

From a business question to a stronger next applicationOne operating system connects the work to the learning it creates.
Input

Business question

A problem is framed as a question the work needs to answer.

Foundation Readiness

Solutions Foundry

Build, review and correct the solution.

Shape and assure throughout delivery

Experience Framework

Shape how people understand and use the result.

Trust Assurance

Check applicable claims and retain evidence.

Sovereign Ground

Maintain authoritative sources, knowledge and continuity across the work.

Output

Delivered solution

A usable result with its source, evidence and ownership.

From the inputWhat was asked
Learning and knowledge

Compare the need with the result

Evaluate the question, the solution and the evidence. Retain what is learned and decide what becomes reusable knowledge.

From the outputWhat was delivered

Reusable knowledge strengthens the next application.

The input and output sit outside Cascadia. The five capabilities work inside it; learning is evaluated before knowledge is carried forward.

03

How delivery becomes knowledge.

Learning happens through a maintained process: preserve what happened, evaluate what it means and change the next starting point where the evidence warrants it.

From a real need to the next applicationThe same loop can operate at the level of a small change, a build or a larger solution.
  1. A real need

Define the decision and what a useful result must do.

  2. Deliver an increment

Build, check and preserve an identifiable version.

  3. Review what happened

Combine test evidence, use and human feedback.

  4. Evaluate the lesson

Decide what to correct, retain, adopt or defer.

↓ Preserve the evidence and evaluate what should carry forward

Project records

Keep the observation, context, version, evidence and decision with the work.

Maintained knowledge

Adopt useful changes into standards, methods, references, skills or tools.

Carry the selected knowledge forward: the next real need enters with a stronger starting method and its own context.

An observation is retained before it becomes accepted knowledge. Project-specific findings can remain local; shared changes require an adoption decision.

04

An operating practice, made portable.

The architecture grew out of delivering solutions. It gives that experience a maintained form that can be applied in another setting.

Cascadia has been operating through the work throughout its development. The recent architecture makes that accumulated practice explicit, programmable and portable.

Earlier applications

The discipline was already in use.

Early analytics builds combined architecture, business definitions and reproducible work. Medical Devices, Pharmacy and Staffing applied that practice through SQL Server and Power BI.

Inspect an early case study ↗
Accumulated delivery

More of the work became testable.

Later builds made more of the work explicit:

  • Source custody and metric definitions
  • Separate calculations and reader review
  • Operation after delivery

Build by Build preserves which evidence each build carried and its recorded limits.

Follow Build by Build ↗
The portable architecture

The method can travel with the work.

Maintained standards, executable procedures, project adoption and versioned evidence now make more of the practice repeatable across applications. Each new context still needs its own expertise, ownership and verified tool support.

Visible in the result. Traceable in the record.

Compare the earlier case studies with Claim Integrity and its current playbook to inspect changes in analytical structure, explanation, evidence access and interaction. Build by Build makes the assurance progression easier to trace; it is an evidence inventory, not a quality score.
